Every summer, the Institute for Early Childhood Education &
Research (IECER) will host a one- or two-week intensive summer institute
on early childhood education with a leading scholar in the area
of Early Childhood Education. The summer institute can be taken
as a 3-credit course (ECED 480) which can be counted as an elective
in the ECE Certificate or EYE Diploma programs. The topic and the
instructor for the course will be announced in the spring.
Information on the ECE Summer Institute
Registration for the summer institute will be open to early childhood
professionals, teachers, and currently enrolled students, as a credit
or non-credit course. Please check our website in the spring for
further details.

4. Frequently Asked Questions
Q Does one need an undergraduate
degree to be eligible for the Diploma program?
A No. Please see "Who is eligible
to apply" earlier on this page.
Q What is the difference between
a college, such as Langara College or Vancouver Community College,
offering of an Early Childhood Education certification program and
UBC Early Years Education Diploma?
A Colleges offer a one-year, (three
semesters) full-time day program, or a two-year evening program
that is designed to prepare students to meet the requirements of
the provincial Early Childhood Education Registry. The academic
requirement is often the completion of BC grade 12. The college
program prepares students to work in childcare centres, parent participation
preschools, private nursery schools, inclusive childcare and preschools,
family day cares and other child minding services.
Information on College programs can be found at: http://www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/childcare/ece/registry.htm
In contrast, the Diploma in Early Years Education is designed to
enrich the practice of teachers and other early childhood professionals
who already have a bachelor's degree and some experience working
with children.
Q Does the UBC Diploma in Early
Years Education give one the qualifications for a provincial license
as an early childhood educator to teach in preschool or daycare
programs?
A Not necessarily. A license to work
in preschool and daycare settings as a qualified early childhood
educator is granted by the Ministry for Children and Family Development.
Often, this license is obtained after completion of an Early Childhood
Education program in one of the community colleges, university college,
or through the continuing studies programs of some local school
district, and 500 hours of supervised field experience.
For information regarding regulatory requirements for
registration see The
Early Childhood Education Registry or phone 250-952-1726.
Information about approved training institutions offering ECE certification
programs can be found at The
Early Childhood Educator in British Columbia
Q What is the difference
between the Infant Development/Supported Child Care Diploma and
the Diploma in Early Years Education?
The Infant Development/Supported Child Care (IDSC) Program is intended
for two groups of professionals: Infant Development Consultants
who work with children with special needs (and their families) from
birth to age 3 in home and group settings and Supported Child Care
Consultants who work with children with special needs and their
families from ages 3 to 19 in child care settings and before and
after school programs. To obtain more information about this program

(c) Applicants who have been admitted to the diploma program will

the website where students register on-line for their courses (after
they have paid the deposit).
(d) Application deadlines:
* To begin the program in May, all application materials must be
received by the previous March 3rd.
* To begin the program in September, all application materials must
be received by the previous April 30th.
* Please note: The TEO will still process applications for the
Diploma Program after these deadlines. Students can apply and, if
admitted, begin Diploma in Education programs at the beginning of
any session/term of the academic year in which they are admitted.
Students are encouraged to apply early because some courses are
very popular and, therefore, are competitive regarding registration.
* September and May refer to the beginning of the two UBC sessions:
winter session and summer session. However, each session has two
terms and so admitted students may register in a course at the beginning
of any term (winter - September, January; summer May, July), providing
there are spaces and students have the pre-requisites. For further
information, please contact TEO Admissions Officer, Maureen
Shepherd (phone 604-822-4612).
