Infant Development and Supported Child Development Program (IDSC)

Certificate in Infant Development and Supported Child Development (15 credits)

The Certificate program aims to provide students with a basic foundation of the knowledge and skills needed to work in Infant Development (ID) and Supported Child Care (SCC) programs. The Certificate they will receive upon completion of the 5 courses will reflect the fact that they have taken this introductory level of training within a reasonable time frame (approximately 2 years) on a part-time basis. Credits earned through the Certificate program may be applied to the Diploma program.

Infant Development and Supported Child Development Certificate Courses:

To be taken at the beginning of the IDSC Certificate Program, in either order:

  • EPSE 348 (3) Family-Centred Practice for Children with Special Needs

  • EPSE 406 (3) Typical and Atypical Development in Infants and Young Children.

Followed in any order by:

  • EPSE 420 (3) Assessment of Infants and Young Children with Special Needs. Please note: This course will be renamed ECED 439, effective May, 2010.

  • EPSE 440 (3) Supporting Social and Communication Development in Infants and Young Children with Special Needs. Please note: This course will be renamed ECED 440, effective May, 2010.

  • EPSE 441 (3) Early Intervention for Infants and Young Children with Sensory Loss and Motor Impairments. Please note: This course will be renamed ECED 441, effective May, 2010).

The Certificate program is offered through External Programs and Learning Technologies (EPLT). For information on course availability please contact the External Programs and Learning Technologies (EPLT) at 604-822-2013 or visit the EPLT's website.

Diploma in Infant Development and Supported Child Development (30 credits)

The Diploma Program aims to provide additional professional and academic guidance to ID and SCC consultants, to raise their skill and knowledge levels beyond the introductory level, to enhance their level of practice, and to assist them in providing leadership. The Diploma that is awarded at the completion of the 10-course program is a terminal credential, which means that the credits earned cannot be applied to another University degree. Students must complete the Diploma program within 5 years of their acceptance.

  • All Infant Development and Supported Child Development Certificate Courses (15 credits): EPSE 348, 406, 420, 440, 441

  • PLUS 5 approved electives (15 credits)

One of the 5 electives must be taken through UBC, but the other 4 may be taken from approved courses offered through UBC or through other Universities or University Colleges. Approvals should be obtained from the IDSC Advisor prior to registering for the course.

The IDSC Summer Institute

Every year the Institute of Early Childhood Education and Research offers an intensive IDSC Summer Institute with a leading authority in the field: ECED 380 Selected Topics in Infant Development and Supported Child Development (3-12). This 3-credit course (which can be taken more than once, to a maximum of 12 credits) can be counted as one or more electives in the Diploma program.
