Master of Education (MEd) – On campus
I come from a nursing background, where I developed a deep passion for working with children and supporting their well-being in healthcare settings. After several years of working as a nurse, I realized that while addressing children’s physical health was vital, there was a significant need to focus on their emotional, social, and developmental needs, especially in relation to trauma. This led me to pursue a Master’s in Early Childhood Education (ECE) at UBC, where I could expand my understanding of how children develop and how to best support their growth and well-being, particularly in educational contexts.
My experience at UBC so far has been both challenging and rewarding. Transitioning from healthcare to education was initially overwhelming, but I’ve found the program to be incredibly enriching. The interdisciplinary nature of the ECE courses has allowed me to connect my healthcare background with new knowledge about childhood development, learning theories, and the role of educators in supporting children’s social-emotional well-being. Additionally, the collaborative environment at UBC, where discussions with peers and professors help me refine my thinking, has been instrumental in my academic growth.
I decided to pursue further education in ECE because I believe early intervention can have a profound impact on children, especially those who have experienced trauma. I wanted to be better equipped to understand the developmental processes of young children and to contribute meaningfully to creating trauma-sensitive environments that foster resilience and emotional health. UBC’s emphasis on research and evidence-based practices has further fueled my passion for integrating education and well-being to support children in their early years.
