CECER Spring Series: The Family-Centered Research Experience from a Clinician-Scientist Perspective

The Centre for Early Childhood Education and Research (CECER) would like to invite you to the next presentation in their Spring Seminar Series…

Please join us on June 2, 2021 from 3:30 to 4:30 pm PDT on Zoom when Dr. Susan Fawcett will be presenting:

The Family-Centred Research Experience from a Clinician-Scientist Perspective

Clinician-scientists have a unique and valuable lens on the way research and practice influence one another. This presentation will begin with a summary of an intervention study investigating a secondary prevention model of Family-Centred Positive Behaviour Support, a 14-week group parent training program for families of young children with Down syndrome. The experience of one clinician-scientist throughout the research process will also be discussed; from formulating a research question, to moving from a clinician to a researcher role with families, and finally to practical knowledge translation.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Fawcett is the Director of Therapy, Behaviour and Family Support at the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation. She began her career at DSRF as the head Speech-Language Pathologist after completing her M.Sc. at UBC in 2003. Susan has particular interest in the areas of social communication, mental health and behaviour in people with Down syndrome. As part of completing her doctoral degree with Dr. Joseph Lucyshyn in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) at UBC in 2020, she completed a dissertation project evaluating a preventative parent training program for families of young children with Down Syndrome who exhibit mild-to-moderate problem behaviour.
