The ABCDE’s of DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder)

At the end of this presentation, participants will:

  1. Become more Aware of this common but under-recognized neurodevelopmental disorder
  2. become familiar with Brain differences in children with DCD
  3. understand the short- and long-term Consequences of DCD
  4. know the Diagnostic criteria for the DCD
  5. understand the role of early childhood educators, teachers, and kinesiologists in Early identification of children with DCD and how to support these children in the classroom and physical Education

Dr. Zwicker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of British Columbia. She also holds appointments as Associate Member in the Department of Pediatrics (Division of Developmental Pediatrics), Investigator at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Clinician Scientist at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, and is a Research Associate at CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research. Dr. Zwicker has 30+ years of clinical experience as an occupational therapist and is an internationally recognized expert in Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Dr. Zwicker established the first research-integrated diagnostic clinic for DCD in Canada to facilitate diagnosis of this under-recognized disorder. She uses advanced neuroimaging techniques to better understand how the brain differs in children with and without developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and whether brain structure and function can change with rehabilitation intervention.
