Ji Eun Kim

Sessional Lecturer

Email: jieun.kim@ubc.ca

Dr. Ji Eun Kim has been involved in early childhood education (ECE) as a researcher and educator for over 20 years and has been part of the Faculty of Education at UBC since her graduate studies. Her research focuses on early literacy development, multimodality, multiliteracies, and sociolinguistics, drawing on sociocultural theories and employing both qualitative and quantitative methods.

In practice, she has worked with diverse children and families, including those with special needs and immigrant backgrounds, and integrates approaches and frameworks such as Reggio Emilia and the BC Early Learning Framework into her work.

She has contributed to projects including Parents as Literacy Supporters, the Cultural Practice of Literacy Study, and research on children’s e-book reading with Drs. Jim Anderson and Adriana Bus. Her scholarly contributions include the edited volume Reading in the Digital Age: Young Children’s Experiences with E-Books (Springer), peer-reviewed articles, international conference presentations, and reviewer service for leading journals, such as European Early Childhood Education Research Journal and Early Childhood Research Quarterly.

She believes there are a multitude of ways of learning, knowing, and educating, all equally valid.
