Joanna Wong

Master of Education (MEd) – Online Cohort

Hello, my name is Joanna Wong. I am currently a Kindergarten teacher, and I previously taught Grades 2 and 3 before moving to the youngest learners in Kindergarten. I completed my Bachelor of Education (ELL cohort) 11 years ago, and I am grateful to once again be pursuing my Master of Education (Early Childhood Education) at the University of British Columbia.

The Online Cohort of the Master of Education program aligns with my professional and personal needs. Its one course at a time format provides the flexibility to balance my responsibilities as a parent, classroom teacher, and graduate student, while also offering opportunities for in-person engagement during the summer. This format allows me to stay rooted in my practice while deepening my theoretical and pedagogical knowledge.

One of the most meaningful aspects of my M.Ed. journey so far has been connecting with other early childhood educators. Engaging in dialogue, exchanging experiences, and reflecting together has been shifting how I see my role as an educator. This collaborative learning community has inspired me to think more critically, reimagine my approach, and embrace new perspectives on teaching.

My passion lies in play-based learning and social-emotional learning for young children. I am particularly drawn to Langford et al.’s (2024) argument that inclusion and equity in early childhood education require educators to “attend to how children are positioned and how their participation is supported” (p. xx). This perspective pushes me to reflect not only on how I design learning opportunities but also on how I create spaces where all children feel they belong. Through this program, I look forward to gaining deeper insights and research-based strategies to support and nurture my students’ growth and well-being.
