Rachel Lanphear

Sessional Lecturer

Rachel grew up in the USA and has lived in Cincinnati, Ohio and Rochester, New York before moving to Montreal, QC and now settled in Vancouver, BC. She is grateful to live, work, and learn on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Peoples. Rachel’s educational background is in Psychology (BA, McGill University), Early Childhood Education (ECE, I/T, SN, Langara College), and she recently completed the Master’s in Early Childhood Education (MEd) at UBC. She feels fortunate to co-lead ECED490 this Fall term with Nina Monahan, a fellow classmate and alumna in the MEd in ECE program.

Rachel has always loved working with young children in different capacities. She has worked on the floor in an early learning environment with children ages 0-5 years old since 2014, and is currently the Senior Educator at Huckleberry Daycare, an infant/toddler daycare at UBC Childcare Services. Rachel is passionate about supporting children’s natural curiosity, creating authentic, meaningful relationships with children and their families, and learning with children, the land, and other-than-humans with a focus on place-based learning and education. Over the last 7 years, she has also worked with neurodiverse children and their families in their home environment. She believes that our meaningful relationships with children of all abilities, encouraging them to express themselves and their feelings, is a foundational part of our work in the field of early childhood education.
