The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, located in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Point Grey), invites applications for a tenure-track Instructor position in Early Childhood Education. Early Childhood Education is an interdisciplinary program that involves the active participation of faculty, students and visiting scholars from across the four departments and one school in the Faculty of Education. ECE priorities are professional development, research, policy, and leadership in the area of Early Childhood Education. ECE’s graduate programs at the MEd and MA levels are interdisciplinary, cross-departmental programs that consist of core courses in Early Childhood Education and related courses in other departments. In addition to the graduate programs, ECE offers a Minor in Early Childhood Education; the BC ECE Basic and Assistant Certification as well as certificate and diploma programs in Infant Development and Supported Child Development (IDSC), Enhancing Early Learning (EEL), Kindergarten Instruction (KIND) and Educating Young Children (EYC). The work of faculty members in ECE includes theorizing early childhood and early childhood education, research and research methodologies, issues in early childhood curriculum, instruction, assessment and evaluation, and cross-departmental inquiries in early childhood education.
The academic home department for this tenure track Instructor position in ECE is the Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED). Primary teaching and educational leadership responsibilities will be within Early Childhood Education (https://earlychildhood.educ.ubc.ca/), but it is expected that the candidate will also teach at least one course within LLED.
Candidates must possess a doctoral degree with a focus in Leadership in Early Childhood Education, as well as excellent communication skills, and an ability to work collaboratively. We require candidates with experience in ECE curriculum development with a focus on literacy across the ECE curriculum; extensive experience with teaching undergraduate and graduate students in post-secondary institutions (in face-to-face and online teaching modes) in the Canadian context; evidence of strong connections with the local, national, and international ECE community at the scholarly, governmental, and practice levels; and demonstrated promise of engaging in educational leadership activities.
Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications: (a) commitments to ensuring that ECE addresses decolonizing, reconciliation, anti-racist, social and ecological justice issues through evaluation of courses and approaches to teaching and learning in light of the TRC call to action and emerging decolonizing pedagogies; (b) evidence of potential to contribute to academic knowledge and leadership in the field of Early Childhood Education; (c) demonstrated leadership in and commitment to advancing the professionalization of the ECE field through approaches that emphasize the view of ECE as a distinctive pedagogy with important political and ethical commitments to children, families, and communities; (d) extensive knowledge of research, theories, practices, and policies underpinning contemporary early childhood education; and (e) demonstrated leadership to advance the field of ECE through the promotion of innovative theories and practices
The annual workload for a tenure-track Instructor includes a teaching assignment of courses scheduled over the academic year in combination with significant educational leadership opportunities, such as curriculum development and innovation, equivalent to a total of 24 credits. The context of early childhood is changing and becoming increasingly complex. The successful candidate will be expected to provide strong, flexible pedagogical leadership in this time of change. Specifically, the successful candidate is expected to engage in curricular, pedagogical and programmatic innovation across the Early Childhood Education program and to serve within its academic programs.
This is a tenure-track position in the Educational Leadership stream. The successful candidate is, in later years, reviewed for reappointment, tenure and promotion in accordance with the UBC Collective Agreement. Starting salary is determined both by the candidate’s qualifications and experience and by the career progress scale within the Faculty of Education.
